The doctors had been feeling optimistic that the two IV antibiotics Annie is on are helping since her fevers had been coming down. But this afternoon Annie's temperature spiked to over 102 again. The nurse went through Annie's chart with me so we could see exactly how much Motrin Annie has been receiving and how her temps have been over that time. We had thought we had backed off on the Motrin more than we really did apparently.
When Annie was first admitted, she was getting Motrin every 6 hours and her temps would spike right at that 6 hour mark. However, over the last couple days she seemed to go much longer without needing Motrin. But in fact, she was still receiving Motrin every 8 hours. But today, she went more than 12 hours without it and now she has a fever again. So instead of thinking that she has been getting better, we all are starting to think that in fact, we have only been masking her fevers and she really isn't getting any better.
The nurse is contacting the doctors to let them know about all of this and hopefully they'll figure out what needs to change soon to start helping Annie get better.
Annie is transitioning to her regular feedings today. Her BMs seem to have slowed down just a bit, so we'll take whatever progress we can get.
